Our Mission

The mission of the Murphy Foundation is to carry out the wishes of its founder Katherine Murphy Riley, as outlined in the document establishing the organization. The committee maintains a strong preference for grants that produce direct, observable impact on the lives of individuals. 

The Foundation has generally limited its grant making as follows:

Funding Priorities

  • Education
  • Food access/nutrition
  • Environment
  • At-risk youth
  • Homelessness
  • Art
  • Cancer research/treatment

Geographic Focus

  • City of Atlanta (priority area)
  • Morgan County, Georgia

Organizations outside of these parameters may be considered if encouraged to apply by members of the Advisory Committee.

Type of Support:

  • Project support (preferred)
  • Capital support (occasional)
  • Operating support (occasional)

Application Procedures

Grant applications are by invitation only. If you have been invited to submit an application, please note the procedures below. The Foundation makes grants both for ongoing and project-based support.

The Katherine John Murphy Foundation's process is by invitation only.  If invited to apply, a link to the online application form will be emailed to you.

Once invited, if you have not yet registered with our online system, you will be prompted to create an account first so you can return to a saved application at a later date if needed.  As of 2025, you will now be logging into the new portal using a Blackbaud account (vs. a Truist account as in the past.)

Eligibility Requirements

The Trustees will consider all qualified applications received from organizations that are exempt from taxation under the Internal Revenue Code Section 501 (c) (3).

If you are a 509 (a) (3) Supporting Organization, please be prepared to provide additional information.

Grant Process Timeline 

The timeline for the Foundation’s grant process is typically as follows:

  • Late Spring/June/Summer – invitations are issued to non-profits invited for the year
  • October 1 – annual deadline for applications
  • Late October or early November – typical timeframe for foundation’s annual meeting
  • Late November or early December – grant distributions are made
  • All grant payments must be paid by December 31st each year
